Isaac Hobart's Saw and Grist Mill at Little Falls, Township X, now Edmunds, Maine
Work on Paper
Detail of Solomon Cushing's drawing of Isaac Hobarts house and mills at Little Falls on his combined map of Townships No. 1, 2, and part of 10, made between 1795 and 1800, with a contemporary photograph of the mill stream looking towards the bay at low tide in 2023.
In 1792 Col. Aaron Hobart deeded 2000 acres of land to his son Isaac, who came to the township in May of that year. and immediately built not only a sawmill but also a grist mill on Hobart Stream. Indian corn and rye were brought from Lubec, Trescott, Whiting and Pembroke to be ground in Hobart's gristmill which continued in operation until 1826. The sawmill continued in the manufacture of long lumber which was supplemented in 1846 by a lath mill. From R.W. Hobart, "Dennysville 1786-1986 . . . and Edmunds, Too!", 2 ed. Dennys River Historical Society, 1993, p. 96.
