    Cathance Stream Mill Site on the Stagecoach Road in Marion, Maine

    Photographs record the site of a sawmill located in the Cathance Stream below the crossing of the old Stagecoach Road, documented in a map of Washington County published in 1861 by Lee and Marsh Company of New York.

    A third sawmill below the headwater of Cathance Lake is indicated on the 1860 map of Washington County, located just below the point where old Stagecoach Road crosses the Cathance Stream. Families located around the mill site are E. Lyons, Huckins and Pearey. While the map clearly shows a small millpond, the 1867 Water Powers report by the Hydrographic Survey of the State of Maine calls the site "unimproved," suggesting it may have been of short duration.
