Fishway on the Cathance Stream Below Route 86

Two photographs of the fishway on Cathance Stream, just below the crossing under Route 86, taken about forty years apart. The earlier photograph is reproduced from "Salmon on the Dennys, 1786-1988" by Ed Bartlett and Ray Robinson.
Bartlett and Robinson write in "Salmon on the Dennys, 1786-1988": Cathance Stream originates at Cathance Lake in Cooper and Cathance Township, and flows in a southeasterly direction approximately twelve miles to its confluence with the Dennys River. On Cathance Stream, salmon may travel the entire length of the stream as the dam at Great Works Pond has a fishway, and the obstacles near the Route 86 bridge have either been blown out or bypassed by Denil-type fish passage devices. Because of these improvements, it has been stated by present-day biologists that there is more area accessible to the Atlantic Salmon today than was the case in the early days of the settlement (p. 15).
