Fire Tower at Little's Mountain, Cobscook Bay State Park Edmunds, Maine.
Situated a short distance from the South Edmunds rapid, within the confines of Cobscook State Park, is the 50 foot Little's Mountain Fire Tower, formerly operated by the Maine Forest Service. Once a part of the 25-tower system in Washington County, the Little's Mountain tower outlived 23 others to become one of the town's remaining ones in 1972. Shortly thereafter the Edmunds tower became inactive, leaving only the Cooper towner in operation. Guy Cook of Edmunds manned the Little's Mountain Fire Tower for over twenty years, scanning 30 miles in every direction, alert to any plume of smoke rising from the surrounding acres of woodlands. Since aircraft have taken over surveillance of the forests, the Little's Mountain tower was manned only during periods of particularly hazardous conditions. The Sunken Stream fire of 1985 was spotted from this tower by Richard Prouty on April 30, 1985.
