Matthie House on the Preston Road, Edmunds, Maine

The J. Matthie house on the Preston Road is marked on the 1881 Colby Atlas map of Washington County, though it is in a current state of decay and disrepair.
Kate Matthie, who lived here, was a niece to Alton Hallowell's mother. On the 1881 Colby Map of Washington County, the owner of the house was J. Matthie. Along with another local man, William Metcalf, Earl Matthie joined the Canadian Army when World War I broke out in 1914. On November 12, 1917, Nettie (Pushee) Matthie (Mrs. Joseph) received a telegram from Ottawa notifying her that her son, Earl, had been killed in battle in France on October 24. (Mrs. Matthie had lost her husband in 1903, her daughter in 1915, and had only one child left, Ernest, who was at that time in Ayer, Massachusetts, training for France.) William Metcalfe was later awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V, and came home to Maine with an English wife.
