    E.I. White's Mill, Edmunds, Maine

    Around 1900, Machias businessman Everett I. White purchased thousands of acres in and around Edmunds and built a steam mill on the shore by the South Edmunds Road across from Hallowell's Island. In 1908, a disastrous forest fire consumed most of the forest land and burned the mill to he ground.

    Everett I. White, a resident of Machias, purchased extensive timber and farmlands in Washington County and operated mills in Edmunds and Jonesboro and a shipyard at Machias. His large scale logging, milling and store business in Edmunds lasted for about ten years during the early 1900's. In February, 1903, a dam was built on Hobart Stream and woods roads were laid out for the conveyance of logs to the mill on the shore of Cobscook Bay. In 1908 a large fire consumed hundreds of acres of timber on White's and in 1912, after the mill had burned, the company store was sold to South Edmunds residents for use as a church.
