Salmon Clubhouse, Dennysville, Maine
The Dennys River Salmon Club, which was organized in the 1930's, had some 600 members by 1938, some of whom were from as far south as Florida, and even one whose home was in England. Eventually the Salmon Club became the Sportsman's Club, which was incorporated in 1947. By 1957 the newly organized club had 178 members, and was building a Clubhouse with logs cut on its own land on Sol's Point. During the ten year period 1947-1956, a total of 573 fish were caught in the Dennys River, with the highest catch of 103 in 1954 and lowest, 31, in 1951. During each of those years the greatest number of salmon caught was in June. In 1984, the officers were G. Raymond Robinson, President, Robert Hinson, vice president; George Fatula Secretary, and Ed Bartlett Treasurer; Blair Ward, Dr. William Gould, Francis Reynolds, Herbert Polk, Clyde Mattheson, Vernon Cushing, Donald Cushing, David Wilder, and Scott Metcalf, executive committee. At that time there were 149 members. With the decline of the salmon population in the Dennys River, the Club eventually disbanded and donated its land to the Atlantic Salmon Commission.
