    John Allan's Livery Stable

    John Allan's Stage and Livery Stable offered accommodation for the horses of the guests in his hotel, which he rebuilt in 1896. It was purchased by Ken Hodgdon for his garage and Studebaker dealership in the 1930's.

    In 1865 John D. Allan purchased E.C. Wilder's Hotel, renaming it "Allan's Hotel" and continued to provide the public with fine meals, clean, soft beds, and attentive service. His new livery stable provided ample room to accommodate the greater number of horses resulting from the heavier traffic. During the 1920's, the S.D. Warren Paper Company used the capacious barn for stabling the many horses being used in their woods operations in the area. Ken Hodgdon later acquired it as a repair shop and garage for his Studebaker business. The tall roof of the handsome livery stable dominated the skyline of the village, until the barn collapsed from neglect under the weight of snow in the early 1980's.
