    Box and Novelty Mill and Grist Mill on Dennys River, c. 1905

    The box and novelty mill was situated at the junction of the Upper Bridge over the Dennys River and Water Street. In 1900, the box machinery from the old stave mill on the Edmunds side of the river was transferred to this new location, and by May, shooks (sets of parts for assembling boxes), were being manufactured on a large scale in preparation for the sardine season. Novelties, such as turned wooden spools and similar items were produced for various commercial applications. When, on April 4, 1907, the box and novelty mill was reduced to ashes, it was rebuilt by September, with a new conveyor belt to a burner on the Edmunds side of the river to consume the waste. In 1918 the box and novelty mill were included in the lease of all the mills to the Eastern Manufacturing Company, when that lease ran out ten years later, the mills were closed for good.
