Sunrise Trail Crossing on the Station Road, Marion, Maine.
Photograph
Former railroad crossing, Marion Station Road, Marion, Maine. With the end of the railroading era, this is now part of an active snowmobile and ATV trail.
A return trip ticket from Marion to Dennysville cost 20 cents when the Washington County Railroad, WCRR, opened the line in 1898. The Maine Central Railroad bought the WCRR in 1911, continuing passenger service until 1957. After the railroad ceased freight service in 1985, the rails were taken up and plans made to convert the disused rail line to the Sunrise Trail for recreational purposes in the early 2000s.
