Raymond Higgins Poultry Barn, Dennysville, Maine
Photograph
Modern three-story poultry barn building owned by Raymond Higgins, behind the Mill House in Dennysville, Maine.
The opening of the Washington County Railroad in the 20th century marked the advent of the delivery of low cost grain to farmers and the sudden growth of the poultry industry in and around Dennysville. This open sided three story chicken barn is typical of the early production facilities that raised poults, laying hens and meat birds. During the 1960s long single story metal barns, known as "hen pens," began to replace these early wooden structures, which continued until the railroad ceased operations in the 1980's.
