Lyman K. Gardner's Blacksmith Shop
Lyman Gardner's father, Ebenezer C. Gardner, was one of two brothers who came to Dennysville in 1832, and were listed in the 1861 Washington County map as blacksmiths. Ebenezer was succeeded in business by his son, Lyman, about whom it was written in the June 16, 1897 Eastport Sentinel, "Mr. Lyman K. Gardner of this village has a 'Peter Wright" steel faced anvil, weighing 100 lbs., which was used by his father, the late Ebenezer Gardner, in Calais 65 years ago. It passed through the fire when the old blacksmith shop burned in this village 50 years ago." Lyman's own shop was downhill from John Kilby's store, and across from John Allan's. The building was later used as a blacksmith shop by Harry Smith, as well. During the years of S.D. Warren's lumbering operations in the area, 1921-1927, their company office was located in the former shop.
