    A single stone in the town cemetery bears witness to the effect of the destruction of the battleship Maine in the harbor of Havana, Cuba in February 1898, which set the stage for the Spanish-American War. The following entries from local storekeeper Fred L. Gardner's journal reflected the war news that reached Dennysville: "April 17, 1898 War looks bad "April 21, 1898 It is reported that war is declared between Spain and the United States. "April 22, 1898 The first shots of the Spanish American War were fired today on a Spanish merchantman by the 'USS Nashville.' "July 3, 1898 We are receiving bad news from Santiago de Cuba." There are no records of Dennysville's involvement, if any, in the four-month war. One memorial stone at the town cemetery reads, William Henry Chase, 1875-1952, Spanish-American War.
