Katie Maker's Corner
Map
A sharp corner on the County Road, now Route 86, marks the junction with the old Stagecoach Road, which at one time carried travelers on a direct route to Machias, past Gardner's Lake. Katie (Lund) Maker, was one of a family of twenty-four children raised at Lund's Corner lived in a house on this corner, and prized her independence.
The first road to Machias was cut through here to Gardner's Lake in the early 1800's to carry the mail and passengers on the stagecoach, and served as one of the first post roads in the District. Katie Maker was one of 24 children of the Lund family that lived at the junction of what is now Routes 86 and 191 and is still called Lund's Corner. When she moved closer to the village of Dennysville on the Marion Road, (Route 86), in the mid-twentieth century, the corner where she lived became known as Katie Maker's Corner.
