Charlotte Pound

There has been a pound for stray animals in Charlotte, Maine since the early 19th century. Cattle, sheep and pigs that wandered away from their owners' properties were kept in the pound until the owners retrieved their missing animals. Some animals wandered many miles before being captured in Charlotte, including some from Robbinston, Unlike many such pounds in New England, the Charlotte pound is made with logs rather than stones. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

People who maintained the pounds and cared for the animals received modest payment. The pound is no longer in use for stray animals, but is now maintained by various civic groups and individuals in the town over the years. The history of animal pounds in Charlotte was detailed in a 2021 issue of The Loon II, the newsletter of the Charlotte Historical Society.
